Hot on the heels of a suggestive Instagram post from “Rush Hour” co-star Chris Tucker that indicated a third sequel to the 2008 action-comedy was in the works, Jackie Chan has had his people release a statement denouncing his involvement in the film.
The statement doesn’t point the finger at Tucker but a “motion picture industry professional” named Esmond Ren, who has been doing the rounds on social media releasing false information concerning the hiring of the crew, casting, audition and other matters in connection with a “Rush Hour 4” and a sequel to Chan’s “Karate Kid”.
Chan, it seems, is not officially onboard either film at this stage.
‘We have noted the false information that Mr. Chan would act in the motion pictures Rush Hour 4 and The Karate Kid 2 is spreading through multiple social media platforms, and that certain apparently infringing parties have misappropriated the personal WeChat and email accounts of Mr. Esmond Ren, a motion picture industry professional, to release false information concerning the hiring of the crew, casting, audition and other matters in connection with the pictures Rush Hour 4 and The Karate Kid 2,’ Chan’s management wrote.
‘On behalf of Mr. Chan, we hereby declare that any and all such information, as spread by such infringers, relating to Mr. Chan providing or about to provide acting services in the motion pictures Rush Hour 4 and/or The Karate Kid 2 is false…’
Tucker has been careful to recognize that “Rush Hour 4” isn’t a go picture just yet, only stating that everyone – predominantly the cast and studio – are keen to do another one. Fact that Chan was happy to tease fans in Tucker’s post suggests he’s not opposed to doing it, his management are simply just stating facts – there’s no film yet.
As for a sequel to the 2010 remake of “The Karate Kid”, in which Chan played Mr. Han? Buckley’s chance of that happening now that the original ‘Karate Kid’ series is back in a big way, thanks to the success of YouTube premium’s “Cobra Kai”.
