The Mysterio in “Spider-Man : Far From Home” will be quite the departure from the comic book version, if a claim made by one of the film’s supporting players is accurate.
Jacob Batalon, ‘Ned’ in these new Sony/Marvel “Spider-Man” flicks, says Jake Gyllenhaal’s Mysterio is – as opposed to the source material, in which he’s a villain – actually a “good guy”.
Batalon’s comments about the fishbowl-helmeted character were made at Brazilian Comic Con a few weeks ago, reports Collider.
“Mysterio’s a good guy in this, they’re both teaming up to kill the game, to defeat these Elemental monsters.”
As for the plot of the film, the sequel to “Spider-Man : Homecoming”, Batalon says “It’s basically just about the kids going on a European vacation. We go to London, we go to Prague, we go everywhere. It’s just a really fun thing. There’s a lot of dynamics that go on. A lot of relationship stuff. A lot of cool funny stuff. A lot of fun stunt stuff. The main focus is for him not to be Spider-Man per se, but he gets dragged into it. But you know he reluctantly saves the world again with Mysterio.”
Gyllenhaal, also speaking at CCXP, says it’s Nick Fury that unites Spider-Man and Mysterio.
“Well there are these threats to the world, the Elemental creatures, and Mysterio is someone who knows about them and who wants to make sure that the world is safe from them, and Nick Fury asks him to come on and help because he’s the only one who really understands them in a way. And he teams up with the Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man and unfortunately he has to make him become more than just a Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man.”
So, as far as these guys want us to believe, the Elementals are the bad guys of the movie.
Wikipedia describes The Elementals as “four extradimensional humanoids who became immortals with power over natural forces and who ruled a kingdom on Earth before the rise of the original Atlantis. They are Hydron, lord of the waters; Magnum, master of the earth; Hellfire, wielder of flame; and Zephyr, mistress of the winds.”
In the comics, Mysterio is well-known as one of Spidey’s adversaries, so it’ll be interesting to see if there’s some kind of twist near the end of the film in which the fellow shows his true colors.
