Joel Schumacher returning to Batman!

Joel Schumacher, director of “Batman Forever” and “Batman & Robin”, might get to complete his trilogy of Batman films after all.

Those with fond memories of Corona’s  Coming At tractions archive (or any good book detailing unproduced films or films stuck in ‘development hell’) will recall that Warner Bros originally intended to bring “Flatliners” helmer Schumacher, and his “Batman & Robin” cast, back for another installment in the series. “Batman Triumphant”, as it was titled in it’s development phase, would’ve seen Batman and Robin (George Clooney and Chris O’Donnell) clashing with The Scarecrow (Jeff Goldblum was said to be the frontrunner for that role) and Harley Quinn (Madonna’s name had been mentioned as a possibility). Jack Nicholson’s ‘The Joker’ would’ve appeared in one scene – which would’ve cost Warner Bros a pretty penny.  Alicia Silverstone would’ve been back as Batgirl, while Martin Short and Mark Linn-Baker were said to be attached in supporting roles (some say as The Mad Hatter and Man-Bat, respectively). Much like Schumacher’s previous “Batman” movies, it would’ve undoubtedly been clad with too many characters and likely too thin a plot.

It goes without saying that plans for a fourth sequel to Tim Burton’s “Batman” (1989)  were swiftly cancelled when Schumacher’s “Batman & Robin” flopped like a glider without wings at the B.O.  The franchise was put back on the shelves, until Christopher Nolan would revive it many years later.

All these years later, Schumacher might get a chance to complete his version of the ‘Batman’ story.

According to Bleeding Cool, Schumacher is writing a comic that will combine the scripts of his three Batman movies – “Batman Forever”, “Batman & Robin”, and “Batman Triumphant”.

Because Bleeding Cool has been told that Joel Schumacher is writing a twelve issue Batman comic, currently being drawn by Dustin Nguyen, which will revisit his intentions for the three films, or which two were made. Rewritten from scratch and telling one story, this will contain his original vision for the movies.

The return of the Bat Nipples – if even in comic form – at long last!
