Jonny Quest movie lives – is The Rock still onboard?

Umpteen years after Zac Efron and Dwayne Johnson flirted with starring in and producing a feature film based on the property, Hanna-Barbera’s ”Jonny Quest” returns to the greenlit pile – this time with “Lego Batman” helmer Chris McKay attached to helm.

Some good pedigree producing too, with Dan Lin, Jonathan Eirich, and Adrian Askarieh all on deck. Daniel Alter, known for producing action fare like “Hitman”, is executive producing.

The WB-flick is based on an animated series created by Doug Wildey in the mid-1960s. It focused on boy hero Jonny Quest who travels with his scientist father, his adopted brother Hadji, and their former secret agent bodyguard, Race Bannon, around the world to solve world-threatening mysteries. Blah, blah… all good fun. Popular stuff, actually. Still sells big.

In one version of the film, Efron, back in his moppy-hair teen-dream days, was set to play Quest with Dwayne Johnson attached to play bodyguard Race Bannon. According to The Wrap’s report, a “major movie star” is onboard to play the character in this latest incarnation, so there’s a chance that Johnson is back aboard. Just an inkling of a feeling, anyway. I don’t know, I’m just reading between the lines.

Austinite Robert Rodriguez (“Sin City”) also had a stab at bringing the property to the big screen at one stage.
