In Freeform’s “Motherrland : Fort Salem”, actor Kai Bradbury (“Warigami”) plays Gerit, a male witch who comes to Fort Salem and strikes up a whirlwind relationship with one of the lead witches (Jessica Sutton). The series reimagines history where witches ended their persecution 300 years ago by cutting a deal with a burgeoning U.S. government to fight for their country as powerful soldiers. The story follows three young female witches in basic training in combat magic.
Not surprisingly, since it was such a killer series, “Warigami” seems to have opened a lot of doors for you?
Thank you, I really appreciate it! Warigami was an incredible opportunity and I am so grateful to the production team for having me on.
I had never worked on a role that size in film and I have no doubt that it played a part in getting me seen for my recent projects.
Were you intentionally chasing a role very different to Vincent as a follow-up?
I wouldn’t say intentionally but I’m so happy that Motherland: Fort Salem came my way. Vincent’s cynicism, fast-talking and quick-thinking confidence was a big step away from me as a person.
I’m a romantic, so I certainly felt more at home playing Gerit.
How did the part of Gerit come to you?
It happened very quickly! I left the audition with a really good feeling, which normally doesn’t mean anything. I told my agent that it went well and the next day we were arranging a chemistry read with Jessica Sutton who plays Tally. Chemistry reads are effectively a call-back to read for the production team so they can see how the actors work together. I had a fantastic time and the following day, my agent called me with the good news. I yelled a lot in public during and after that call.
And the show, like “Charmed”, is about witches I believe?
The occult inspires all kinds of waves in our media. We’ve seen vampires, werewolves, zombies rise and fall. It seems like we’ve woken the witch. Motherland: Fort Salem is certainly about witches but we haven’t seen them like this yet.
How would you describe the tone?
I’m so excited for audiences to step into this brand new world Eliot Laurence has created. The tone is dramatic and powerful but not without humour. It is beautifully shot and has something for everyone.
And I believe you work lately with Jessica Sutton on the show? What can you tell us about your onscreen relationship?
Jessica, like all of the main cast, is incredibly hard working and giving as a scene partner. I am so grateful to have worked so closely with her; she is a gem and her spirit and laughter is infectious. At the moment, I can’t say much so you’ll have to tune in to see what the witches of Salem get up to!
What can we expect over the course of the season?
Expect to fall in love with these characters and watch them rise beyond their expectations. Motherland has got everything you want in a sci-fi drama… action, adventure, love and loss. What you won’t find? Broomsticks and cauldrons.
