Big up-and-comer Michael Waldron, who just penned “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” for Disney and is a head writer and executive producer on the studio’s “Loki” series on Disney+, has been tapped to write a “Star Wars” flick. Interestingly enough, and suggesting this one might be inching closer towards production, this is the “Wars” effort that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has long been attached to produce and develop.
Disney – and Feige – are obviously woodsying over Waldron, they’ve also offered him a secure writing gig on the second season of “Loki”.
Feige’s “Star Wars” project was first announced in 2019 – to mixed response from the always-chatty interweb – but wasn’t mentioned at the recent Disney investor day, suggesting it might have been shelved for the time being.
Considering how well he navigated the Marvel cinematic universe over the past decade, no surprise that Lucasfilm and Disney would want Feige more involved in their other top brand – particularly after the coolish response to the last couple of “Star Wars” flicks.
The plot of Feige’s film remains under wraps but the “Iron Man” producer had mentioned that he loves “that world and I love the notion of exploring new people and new places in that universe. But that’s sort of all that can be said for now.”
In other words, it’ll be something new. New setting. Feige is believed to have promised a regular collaborator a role in the film too – – I’ve heard that’s Samuel L.Jackson, the Marvel movie staple who played Mace Windu in the “Wars” prequels (and if so, that would make this new film a prequel to George Lucas’s “The Phantom Menace”).
While the jury is still out on Waldron’s crowd-pleasing ability, Feige has proved himself a master at the summer tentpole so my ticket is already in the queue for this puppy.
