Kurt Russell wanted for new Stargate movie!?

MGM

He hasn’t been involved in the franchise since the original 1994 film but might Kurt Russell be eyeing a tardy second walk through the Stargate?

That’s the rumor per Giant Freakin Robot who say the 70-year-old actor is being courted to reprise his role as Colonel Jonathan ‘Jack’ O’Neil in the on-again off-again on-again (?) “Stargate” reboot.

(While O’Neil was a regular fixture on the small-screen series “Stargate SG-1”, he didn’t wear Russell’s phizog; Richard Dean Anderson (of “MacGyver”) took over the role for the popular spin-off.)

Here’s the dirt from GFR :

According to one of our trusted and proven inside sources, the studio wants Kurt Russell to come back for a new Stargate feature film. Our source also says that the studio is hoping that this would kick off a cinematic universe that would include both movies and television shows. We were not able to clarify just how substantial or recurring Russell’s role would be in this newest iteration of the franchise. We aren’t sure if this would act as a way of passing the torch to a new generation or if the plan is to try and have Russell be a central presence in this new arm of the property. All we can confirm is that the studio definitely wants Kurt Russell to be a part of the new Stargate project.

No word on whether Russell’s “Stargate” co-star James Spader, who played on the big screen, is also being sought.

Thing is, last we’d heard from “Stargate” director Roland Emmerich, the reboot – which would’ve kicked off a new trilogy of films, per the “2012” director’s plan – had hit a snag and wasn’t moving ahead.

Speaking to Comic Book Movie, the filmmaker said the studio weren’t too hot on the idea.

“Yeah, I kind of talked a little bit with MGM about Stargate. But I think this is going nowhere because there was another TV show, and they kind of realized that if it’s like some sort of a mixed bag”.
