Lego Movie‘s Chris McKay directing Dracula spin-off

“Renfield”, the next Universal Movie Monster cab off the rank, has tapped “Lego Movie” and “Tomorrow War” helmer Chris McKay to direct and produce.

As the title suggests, the film tells the story of Dracula’s unhinged cohort. In the original Bram Stoker novel,R.M Renfield was an inmate at a lunatic asylum who was thought to be suffering from delusions but actually is a servant of Dracula.

Robert Kirkman, of “The Walking Dead” fame, wrote the original outline for the film. Ryan Ridley wrote the most recent draft.

The project, the latest in a long line of classic horror reboots in the works at Uni, is said to be set in the present day.

Per Deadline, “insiders say the story’s mix of humor and action was something the studios was looking to have more of because so many of the other properties have a more horror element to them like Universal’s box office hit The Invisible Man.”

Dexter Fletcher, who helped the studio’s execs align their wallets with a lot of coin with “Rocketman”, was originally tapped to direct.
