Lethal Weapon 5 in ‘active development’; Warner hot for sequel

Out promoting his new flick “Fatman” (a real return to form for the grizzled action vet), Mel Gibson confirmed a couple of weeks ago that the on-again off-again on-again fifth “Lethal Weapon” movie is “absolutely” still on the cards.

According to the actor and filmmaker, series director Richard Donner – now a sprightly, er, – is working on the project. Whether that means Dick is directing again (seems unlikely…), or merely producing and overseeing the concept, is to be seen – that might come down to Warner’s insurance dept.

“And the man behind all that, the man who brought it to the screen, and gave it the goodies is working on it right now,” the New York Born-thesp told GMA, “He’s a legend.”

How on-the-money is Gibson’s status update? According to a reliable tipster- a producer working on an separate project at the Warner compound – who I spoke to over messenger on the weekend, the film is ”currently classified as being in ‘active development'” at WB. What’s that mean to the unversed punter? unless something goes really screwy, it’s on.

There have been four “Lethal” movies to date, the last one mismatching the template of the originals with an Ivan Reitman-style family comedy. Yup, we need something better this time out.
