Liberato hunting down Sin Eater

Based on the acclaimed novel by Francine Rivers

Newcomer Liana Liberato will play the lead role in “The Last Sin Eater” – no, not a sequel or prequel to the Heath Ledger abomination from a few years back – a new family film from director Michael Landon Jr.

The movie, based on the book by Francine Rivers, is set in Appalachia in the 1850s, and is the story of a community committed to its myth of a human “sin eater,” who absolves the dead of their sins, and the ten-year-old child who shows them the truth of Jesus.

In the movie, Liberato (“CSI : Miami”) will play young Welsh girl, Cadi, described as “a young & smart girl who seems to bear the weight of the world in her eyes and on her shoulders, Cadi lives in an isolated cove of the Great Smoky Mountains – so isolated that she has never heard the name of Jesus, and still follows the Celtic beliefs of her forebears. Guilty because her 5-year-old sister Elen followed her into the woods and fell to her death, Cadi lives in a gloomy house, darkened by the loss of a beloved child.

Well aware that her community has a Sin Eater, a hermit who is shunned by normal people and hides his face from everyone, Cadi goes in search of him, hoping that he can lift her burden of guilt by taking her sins upon himself. But in the process of hunting for the Sin Eater, Cadi finds out the secret past of her community – a past that involves massacre and treachery”.

The film, which starts shooting next month, was co-written by Brian Bird, who has worked on such shows as “Touched by an Angel” and “Step by Step”, and is currently working on a new series for Martin Sheen.
