Long-gestating Strangers sequel gets a director

Universal have been trying to get a sequel to 2008’s “The Strangers” up for quite some time – but for one reason or another a second serve of the home invasion tale hasn’t come to fruition.

Johannes Roberts, director of “The Other Side of The Door”, is going to try and push this past development phase. Bryan Bertino, who wrote and directed the original film, will pen the script with “The Forest” screenwriter Ben Ketai.

The sequel, produced by The Fyzz Facility Pictures in association with Relativity Media, will be shopped at this month’s EFM in Berlin.

Here’s what The Hollywood Reporter has on the idea :

The Strangers 2 follows a family whose road trip takes a turn when they arrive at a secluded mobile home park and after the power goes out they decide to hunker down for the night in a borrowed trailer. Under the cover of darkness, three masked psychopaths pay them a visit to test their every limit. Filming is scheduled to begin this summer.

“The Strangers redefined the home invasion genre by perfectly combining character and terror in a way that we rarely see,” The Fyzz’s co-founder Mark Lane said in a statement. “This is a sequel that has been eagerly awaited and we are delighted to deliver it to the fans.”

Roberts added that he is excited to “bring the brilliant set-up from the first movie to a new generation and deliver a powerful sequel.”

Bloom has taken international rights to the film, whose predecessor chalked up $82 million globally.
