“Machete” was fun, but was it worthy of a sequel, let alone two? I dunno.
Nevertheless, “Spy Kids” milker Robert Rodriguez is rubbing the teats again, squeezing out a couple of sequels (though it’s possible that the two sequels have been rolled into one) to the 2010 actioner.
Deadline says “Machete Kills”, rumoured for a while now, has gotten it’s finance. Alexander Rodnyansky’s AR Films US will lend the first of the two proposed sequels, again starring Rodriguez-regular Danny Trejo, it’s dollars.
“The fan response to the Machete character has been fanatical since his first appearance,” Rodriguez said. “Machete is truly a super hero and Machete Kills will be bigger and more ambitious than the first time.”
The weblog has a summary of the sequel’s story :
The new film finds Machete recruited by the U.S. Government for a mission which would be impossible for any mortal man. Machete must battle his way through Mexico to take down a madman cartel leader and an eccentric billionaire arms dealer who has hatched a plan to spread war across the planet with a weapon in space. Machete takes on an army in an effort to dismantle a plan for global anarchy.
The script has been written by Kyle Ward, and developed by Rodriguez and Marcel Rodriguez; Rodriguez will again direct. An April start is being eyed.
