Meet the new Joker: Joaquin Phoenix lands the role in the Joker origin flick at Warner Bros.

His name has been circling for some months, and Joaquin Phoenix has finalised a deal with Warner Bros to play Batman’s arch-nemesis The Joker in the upcoming origin film.

The film is set to begin shooting in New York in September, while a release date hasn’t yet been finalised. Todd Phillips is directing the film and co-wrote the script, which the studio describes as being an “exploration of a man disregarded by society [that] is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale.”

Other plot details are unknown at this early stage.

Another Joker film is still in development with Jared Leto as the villain, who also played him in “Suicide Squad”.
