With Robert Pattinson reportedly the pick for the next Batman, expect all attention to now turn to casting that film’s “rogue’s gallery” of villains.
Director Matt Reeves has suggested that his upcoming, untitled ‘Batman’ feature will feature numerous villains known to lurk the streets of Gotham.
While Deathstroke was in the original plan for the movie, and the studio had set Joe Manganiello set wear his mask, that was back before the script was retooled to allow Ben Affleck to depart the piece as the title character. The script was later revised to make room for a younger Batman – thus the hiring of 32-year-old Pattinson – and by all accounts and purposes, the film’s storytelling changed a little too.
Deathstroke could indeed be part of the film still, but at this stage there’s been no mention of him factoring in. According to Heat Vision‘s newsletter, two villains that Pattinson’s Batman will face in the movie are Catwoman and The Penguin.
Those characters, who appeared together in 1992’s “Batman Returns” (played by Michelle Pfeiffer and Danny DeVito, respectively), will also be joined by The Riddler says Collider. The latter, of course, appearing in the 1995 film “Batman Forever”, with Jim Carrey wearing the green tights.
Josh Gad, who this week was revealed as the star of a new “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids” reboot, has been lobbying hard to play The Penguin in the film (he’ll at least get a meeting, for sure), but no Catwoman or Riddler contenders have emerged as yet.
Some outlets are reporting that the film will feature no less than six villains.
The film – sometimes known as “The Batman”- opens June 25, 2021.
