Michael Keaton will return as Beetlejuice!

When it was announced a few weeks back, the “Beetlejuice” reboot/sequel came complete with an impenetrable seal that would seemingly be ripped off for the curious closer to production. Thankfully, atleast one of the secrets locked inside has been revealed – and it’s a smile-evoker.

In a piece over at EW discussing their upcoming projects, David Katzenberg and Seth Grahame-Smith, the writing/producing duo behind KatzSmith Productions, confirmed that Michael Keaton will be back as Beetlejuice in the film – which won’t (prepare to wipe the sweat from the brow) be a remake, but a follow-up to the 1988 hit.

The duo, who are have ”Alive in Necropolis”, based on a supernatural crime novel by Doug Dorst, and the ‘Weird Science’-esque “From Mia With Love”, among others in the works, say they only wanted to get involved in the project if Tim Burton was all for it and Michael Keaton’s Beetlejuice would be the main headline act.

DK: We’re not remaking Beetlejuice. People have been very angry about that.
SGS: When Warner Bros. came to us about it, we said the only way we’d do it if we got Tim [Burton’s] blessing and involvement, and we got that, and the star of the movie has to be Michael Keaton as Beetlejuice, and it’s a true continuation 26 years later. Not just throwing him in as a cameo going, “Hey, it’s me. I endorse this movie.” We’re not there yet [with Keaton] because we don’t have a film to present to him.

Geena Davis is also keen, guys; if you can find a way to shave a few years off of her, you might want to slot her in there somewhere too. Spoken like a true purist. Heck, Jeffrey Jones could probably get leave from his stinky cell for a quick day’s work?
