Not surprisingly, considering punters aren’t at all ready to return to movie theaters, Disney has postponed the release of their next big superhero tentpole to next year.
“Black Widow,” starring Scarlett Johansson, was set to debut on Nov. 6, a date that started to look increasingly unlikely as movie theaters on the coasts remained closed. Variety has confirmed that the film, which also stars Florence Pugh and, will now open on May 7, 2021.
As a consequence of “Black Widow’s” shift, Disney has pushed “Eternals” to November 5, 2021. The film, starring Angelina Jolie, was previously dated for Feb. 12, 2021.
“Shang Chi”, Marvel’s first Asian-led jaunt, will move from May 7, 2021 to July 9, 2021.
Meanwhile, the studio has pushed “Death on the Nile” – the follow-up to “Murder on the Orient Express” – until December 18, vacating its original October 23 bow.
It’ll be a longer wait for Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story”. The highly-anticipated film, which marks Spielberg’s first foray into musicals, was expected to be a key Academy Awards contender. An awards career may still be in its future, but not at this year’s Oscars. “West Side Story” will launch a year later than expected, on Dec. 10, 2021 instead of Dec. 18, 2020.
“Deep Water,” Adrian Lyne’s thriller with Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas, will also no longer open this year. The film, originally due Nov. 13, 2020, will now debut on Aug. 13, 2021.
There are only half-a-dozen or so studio films being released in the remainder of 2020, including “Coming to America 2” starring Eddie Murphy, “Freaky” starring Vince Vaughn, and “The Empty Man” with James Badge Dale.
