Denis Villeneuve will direct the long-gestating big screen adaptation of Arthur C.Clarke’s “Rendezvous with Ramas”.

Morgan Freeman, who had been attached to star many years ago and who has held the rights to the source material, is producing.

The project, set up with Alcon Entertainment, follows a group of human space explorers who are tasked with intercepting an alien starship that is hurtling through the solar system. It is believed that the missions will lead to mankind’s first contact with alien intelligence.

Villenueve also has the “Dune” sequel on his to-do list.
