A new, long-proposed “Stargate” trilogy – something the creators have been talking about for years – has been greenlit.
Roland Emmerich, who directed and co-wrote the original “Stargate” (1994), will direct the first film in the series. Dean Devlin will produce.
It’s unlikely Kurt Russell and James Spader, who starred in the original film, will return to headline – but we’ll take a punt and say one or both will make an appearance – a’la the original trilogy gang popping up in JJ Abrams’ “Star Wars Episode VII”. There’s certain to be some sort of carrying-the-torch element to it.
The new films will be a joint production between Warner Bros and MGM – who produced the original film.
“Stargate”, released in 1994, was the highest-grossing opening weekend release for an October title at the time; the film went on to earn nearly $200 million worldwide.
A TV series spin-off, starring Richard Dean Anderson, was near as successful, running for several years and resulting in several profitable direct-to-video “Stargate” telemovie releases.
