Original New Jack City director, star on reboot plans

The star and director of 1991’s “New Jack City” says he’s not opposed to Warner Bros rebooting the classic crime thriller.

In September last year, it was announced that the studio had tapped Malcolm M.Mays to pen a reboot which Bill Gerber and Doug McHenry would produce. No director was attached at the time.

Acclaimed actor and filmmaker Mario Van Peebles tells The Production Meeting that he won’t be taking the reigns on it.

“Every now and then they try to bring in back – I’m not sure where that stands right now”, the actor, who played Stone n the original film, tells the podcast.  “Sometimes certain classics you’re better leaving alone.”
The actor suggests he’s not against remakes, if only because one of his favourite films is a remake of a classic.
“I like the ’62 version version [of Mutiny on the Bounty] with Marlon Brando [the most]”, says Van Peebles, noting that he needs to rewatch the 1935 film (and 1984) version again.
As for “New Jack City”, “I don’t know if they’ll do a remake or a sequel or how they’ll handle it. But I’m not involved.”

Van Peebles is involved in a follow-up to one of his films, 1993 western “Posse”.

The new film, he says, isn’t a direct sequel but “it’s in a similar playing field. It’s kinda like the spaghetti westerns that [Clint] Eastwood did. So, not a direct a sequel but it’s going to be dope.”
