Peter Mayhew, the man we know and love as “Star Wars” character Chewbacca, has sadly passed away at the age of 74. The news was confirmed by his family on his social accounts.

Mayhew was best known for his portrayal as lovable Wookie Chewbacca, whom he played for “Star Wars” (1977), “The Empire Strikes Back” (1980), “Return of the Jedi” (1983), “Revenge of the Sith” (2005), and T”he Force Awakens” (2015). He also served as a consultant for Joonas Suotamo, who was the new actor playing Chewie in “The Last Jedi”.
Mayhew stood at 7 feet 3 inches, which is what landed him the role of Chewbacca to begin with. However as a result of being so tall, Mayhew underwent double knee replacement surgery in 2013, as well as spinal surgery last July. He used to joke that all he had to do to land the role as Chewie was “to stand up”.
He was a popular figure at conventions and in the “Star Wars” community alike, and his presence will certainly be missed around the world. May the Force Be With You, Peter.
