RoboCop returns next month to protect the innocent, spike a sales in tin, and make black the new chic fashion must-have for Summer, but just how long will Detroit’s legendary copper be back on the beat for?
Jose Padhila, director of the reboot, says while it’s unlikely RoboCop will be retiring after this mission, he hasn’t committed to a sequel.
“I made a closed movie—I shot RoboCop,” the filmmaker tells FilmJournal.com. “It’s its own thing, but you can do a sequel to it, no doubt about that. You can do a sequel to anything!”
While Sony will no doubt be quick to press the green button on a sequel if “RoboCop” hits a certain number at the box office, sounds like Padhila might need some convincing to return. The filmmaker seems intent on doing something more original next (likely the reason he took on the “RoboCop” job, so it would give him an in to be able to make the movies he wanted to make); next, he directs the true-crime story “The Brotherhood” for Warner Bros, then he hopes to do “Tri-Border”, which he’s currently pitching to various studios. The film, says FilmJournal, fixes on “a DEA agent who journeys to the titular crime-ridden South American region where Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay bump up against each other.”
Meanwhile, the tin man heads back into cinemas in just under a month, and that’ll be when the real pool-table conversations regarding whether Paul Verhoeven’s classic ’80s satire and action-movie mesh should’ve been remade kick in, but for the moment Sony continue to pump out the teases.
Latest bit of marketing to surface for the Padhila (the main reason most speculate this “might turn out OK”) directed film are two new international TV spots (both feature – in their understandably short runtime – a mix of new and ‘seen that last month’ footage) and the first domestic TV spot.
