Ron Howard’s Dark Tower is off!

Director Ron Howard and producing partner Brian Grazer were always going to have a tough time convincing audiences that they needed to sit through multiple “Dark Tower” – about a cowboy and his quest toward a tower, the nature of which is both physical and metaphorica; Stephen King wrote the stories on which the project was based upon – films and spin-off TV series (yes, an ambitious project plan if ever there were); while the audience’s appetite has been slightly wetter of late for such a franchise, it’s the studio that are no longer convinced. Universal has decided not to push on with “The Dark Tower”, which Javier Bardem was attached to play ‘The Gunslinger’ in.
The film had been in trouble for a while; you may recall hearing of the budgetary issues that plagued it and it’s on-again off-again start dates, stemming from both financial and logisitical reasons. The Hollywood Reporter says today was the last day Universal had to make their mind up whether or not they officially wanted to push forward with it or not – which, ultimately, they decided not to.
Instead, it sounds like Howard’s going to pour all his attention into the racing-car flick “Rush”, which Chris Hemsworth is attached to.
Who is disappointed about “Dark Tower”? Do you think it could have worked? Or would we have tired of the concept after a couple of flicks?
