With the last film in the franchise unsuccessful at luring punters into the curtained theater zone, and the dear Wes Craven now no longer with us, one might be a little surprised by today’s news that a new film in the “Scream” series in the works.
Spyglass, who via their association with Lantern Entertainment recently acquired the back catalogue of the now-defunct Dimension Films, has reportedly started threading the Ghostface mask back-together. Whether they’re planning on sequelizing Craven’s films, doing a complete re-boot, or remaking the original ’90s classic isn’t known.
Bloody Disgusting, who had the scoop on Spyglass Prez Gary Barber’s grand plans, says Kevin Williamson, writer of the “Scream” series, isn’t involved in the new incarnation – which is a bit of a shame.

It was previously reported that Spyglass were resurrecting another old Dimension-owned series, “Hellraiser” so I guess it’s not a shocker to believe they have umpteen other revivals of old Harvey and Bob ‘classics’ they want to get back up.
Blumhouse must be pissed though, word has it that Jason Blum was very keen on obtaining the rights to the “Scream” series and reviving the masked murderhound.
The stars of the original four films seem to be mixed on whether or not a new “Scream” film should come to fruition, especially without the late Craven’s involvement.
Speaking with Slasher Radio in 2018, David Arquette said he’d gladly reprise his role for a new film if asked.
“Yeah, absolutely. I would love to do that,” Arquette answered, when asked if he’d return for another movie. “I think [Craven would] still be a part of it in an incredible way. It would be like a tribute almost. Yeah, I think it would be really fun. I love everyone involved in it. Neve is such an anchor, and so incredible as an actress. I think there’s something there.”
Neve Campbell, who played heroine Sidney in the series, told Stephen Colbert last year that “I think it would be challenging… Wes Craven passed away… he was the reason those movies were so good,” Campbell responded. “I mean, obviously Kevin Williamson wrote brilliant scripts. But ya know, Wes was the heart of the thing. He was what kept the dynamic consistence. I think it would be difficult to work with another director.”
