Shane Black reveals details of a Lethal Weapon 5!

When “Lethal Weapon” screenwriter Shane Black (whose new film “The Nice Guys” has just opened around the US and opens in Australia this week) went back to the well to see if he couldn’t come up with an idea for a fifth instalment in the series – one that would warrant Mel Gibson and Danny Glover reuniting after all these years – the result was a New York City-set yarn that would’ve pitted a couple of senior cops against smugglers. It sounds like it would’ve been a terrific film. Alas, the film never happened – and instead we’re getting a “Lethal Weapon” TV series (that Black isn’t involved in).

While Speaking to The Playlist, Black spoke a little about his “Lethal Weapon 5” :

I wrote a 62-page treatment with my friend Chuck for “Lethal Weapon 5” that would’ve been, I think, a very good movie. It was interesting. It was essentially an older Riggs and Murtagh in New York City during the worst blizzard in east coast history, fighting a team of expert Blackwater guys from Afghanistan that’s smuggling antiquities. And we had a young character that actually counter-pointed them. But I didn’t wanna do what people do when they’re trying to transition which is, they sorta put the two older guys in the movie, but really it’s about their son! And he’s gonna take over and we’re gonna do a spinoff. F**k that: If they’re gonna be in the movie, they’re gonna be in the movie — I don’t care how old they are.

Nostalgia is back in a big way, maybe it’s time for Warner Bros to make moves on uniting Gibson and Glover for a new instalment!?

While another “Lethal Weapon” movie isn’t on the cards for Black, the writer and filmmaker has been able to give the “Predator” franchise a new lease on life.
