Showgirls star joins Riverdale

And more surprises ahead for the CW drama

“Showgirls” star Gina Gershon will play Jughead’s mother on season 3 of “Riverdale”, showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa announced at New York Comic Con on Sunday.

Gershon and Trinity Likins, playing Jughead’s sister, will be introduced on the Dec 12. episode of the CW series.

Aguirre-Sacasa described Gershon’s Gladys Jones as a “Serpent with a GED”, while Likins’ Jellybean ‘JB’ Jeans is said to be a young con-artist, living with her bike mother in Ohio.

Aguirre-Sacasa revealed that a HBO drama is his inspiration for the latest season.

“One thing we missed a bit in season two was Betty [Lili Reinhart] and Jughead as investigators, working together to solve a mystery,” he said. “I love the first season of True Detective, which had a weird occult murder mystery, so we thought it’d be fun to see our teen detectives in a True Detective-like plot. It’s a pretty dark, very twisted.”

“I would describe the main mystery in the first half of this season as sort of an epidemic in Riverdale,” Reinhart told Comic-Con attendees. “It involves everyone in the town, and it’s kind of a crisis.”

While Reinhart confirmed that the Betty-Jughead is looking good, ‘Varchie’ devotees will be a bit disappointed to hear that Archie and Veronica won’t be so lovely-dovey.

“I don’t think it’s looking too good for old Varchie this season,” AJ Apa, who plays the title character, said. “Their relationship will definitely be put to the test this season.”

True Lies TV series in the works from McG

The classic Arnie movie is getting a TV adaptation made

McG (“Terminator Salvation”) is taking on more James Cameron, confirming he is working on a TV series adapted from the 1994 action-comedy “True Lies”. The series will be developed for the Disney+ streaming service.

McG spoke to Collider, stating “Well, right now my new thing for television is I’m doing ‘True Lies’ at Disney… which is exciting. I’m writing that one, which is very exciting, because I’m so passionate about that story where you think you know your partner but you don’t.”

Of course what we all want to know is … will there be Arnie? “There’s talk of that. It’s largely rebooted but there may be a spot there, we’ll see.”

In the original “True Lies”, Schwarzenegger plays a secret agent in the film who struggles to find the right balance between his work and family life, where he has to lie to his wife (Jamie Lee Curtis) about his professional activities.

The original 1994 film, also starring Tom Arnold and Jamie Lee Curtis, was expected to be the first in a franchise – but director Cameron went cold on the idea after the events of 9/11, noting that terrorism wasn’t something to make light of anymore.

In the original, Harry Tasker (Arnold Schwarzenegger) is a sales Representative for a computer company, with a wife, Helen, and a daughter, Dana, with a house in the suburbs in Washington D.C. Or so everybody thinks. Harry is actually an agent of a private organization that hunts down any threats to the United States. While he is investigating a possible threat on the U.S., his wife Helen becomes lonely and starts to hang around another man, a used car salesman named Simon (Bill Paxton), so Harry secretly uses his organization’s equipment to monitor on his wife and her new friend. Harry must also worry about the threat on the U.S. Meanwhile, a middle eastern terrorist named Salim Abu Aziz, has formed his own terrorist network he calls “Crimson Jihad” and they are threatening to Nuke the U.S. if they do not get what they want. So, Harry must stop the terrorists and, hopefully, save his own personal life.

McG, who has carved out somewhat of a career for himself in recent years directing and/or producing various small-screen projects for Netflix,  helmed “Terminator Salvation” – a sequel to Cameron’s grandiose ’80s classic “The Terminator”.

Popular martial-arts movie series “Undisputed” – which kicked off in 2002 and has featured the likes of Ving Rhames, Wesley Snipes, Michael Jai White and Scott Adkins – is coming to TV.

Millennium and Empire Films, along with Isaac Florentine, director of the previous three films in the movie series, have set up a TV series adaptation, set to film in 2020 in Bulgaria.

The series, to be executive produced by Yaiv Lerner (“Rambo”), will follow the characters introduced in the film series- most notably, Yuri Boyka (Scott Adkins in the films), a Russian prison fighter on parole who seizes the opportunity to participate in the world’s biggest and most prestigious underground fighting tournament. Exposing the lucrative and intricate underbelly of fighting rings, Undisputed will reveal the microcosm of an expansionist international crime organization and connects everyone in it; those who participate in it, organize it, protect it, investigate it and collect the money. This is a world where every action has consequences.

Rouslan Ovtcharoff, Benjamin Jackendoff, Sean O’Kelly and Marc Bikindou will also be part of the producer’s committee on the project.

“There’s been a tremendous amount of buzz and presales interest around Undisputed the TV series, with buyers quick to recognize its broad commercial appeal,” said O’Kelly, founder of Empire. “As one of the most original and talented directors working today, Isaac Florentine will be sure to deliver the same riveting, high-octane action experience that Undisputed fans around the world have come to love and expect.”

Action-movie vet Florentine believes the TV series is a way to introduce the world of “Undisputed” up to a bigger audience.

“I am hoping that the mainstream American audience will finally discover the character of Yuri Boyka and like him the way he’s adored in the rest of the world”.
