“Showgirls” star Gina Gershon will play Jughead’s mother on season 3 of “Riverdale”, showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa announced at New York Comic Con on Sunday.
Gershon and Trinity Likins, playing Jughead’s sister, will be introduced on the Dec 12. episode of the CW series.
Aguirre-Sacasa described Gershon’s Gladys Jones as a “Serpent with a GED”, while Likins’ Jellybean ‘JB’ Jeans is said to be a young con-artist, living with her bike mother in Ohio.
Aguirre-Sacasa revealed that a HBO drama is his inspiration for the latest season.
“One thing we missed a bit in season two was Betty [Lili Reinhart] and Jughead as investigators, working together to solve a mystery,” he said. “I love the first season of True Detective, which had a weird occult murder mystery, so we thought it’d be fun to see our teen detectives in a True Detective-like plot. It’s a pretty dark, very twisted.”
“I would describe the main mystery in the first half of this season as sort of an epidemic in Riverdale,” Reinhart told Comic-Con attendees. “It involves everyone in the town, and it’s kind of a crisis.”
While Reinhart confirmed that the Betty-Jughead is looking good, ‘Varchie’ devotees will be a bit disappointed to hear that Archie and Veronica won’t be so lovely-dovey.
“I don’t think it’s looking too good for old Varchie this season,” AJ Apa, who plays the title character, said. “Their relationship will definitely be put to the test this season.”
