Sigourney Weaver extends her stay in science-fiction, joins cast of Neil Blomkamp’s latest

Science-fiction vet Sigourney Weaver is headed back to the realm of bleep, boop and whizz for “Chappie”, the new Neill Blomkamp film that’s now in production in South Africa.

The “Aliens” and “Avatar” actress joins Hugh Jackman, Sharlto Copley, Dev Patel, Ninja and Yolandi Visser for the Sony Pictures and Media Rights Capital production.

THR, who broke the news of Weaver’s anointment, has the following synopsis : “After being kidnapped by two criminals during birth, Chappie becomes the adopted son in a strange and dysfunctional family. Chappie is preternaturally gifted, one of a kind, a prodigy. He also happens to be a robot.”

Copley, a Blomkamp-regular, is voicing Chappie.

“X-Men” alum Simon Kinberg serves as one of the film’s producers.
