Sigrid Thornton returns for SeaChange revival

Australia is following the lead of America – nothing unusual there – seemingly up to rework some of it’s small-screen classics.

While a “Bob Morrison Show” or “Hey Dad!” reboot hasn’t inched ahead (yet), Channel Nine has announced plans to bring beloved ’90s dramedy “SeaChange” back for 2019.

The last episode of the original run, originally an ABC offering starring Sigrid Thornton and William McInnes, aired in 2000. The new episodes will air next year on new home, Nine.

At this stage, Nine would only confirm Sigrid Thornton and John Howard as reprising their roles of Laura Gibson and Bob Jelly, respectively. Not even the filming location of the series – originally Barwon Heads in Victoria -has been revealed, likely to keep real estate investors from snapping up properties before the tourism boom begins again thanks to the revival.

Set in the small coastal town of Pearl Bay, the original series followed the life of magistrate Gibson as she juggled work, motherhood and romantic relationships in the eccentric town.

Twenty years on, Laura returns to the beachside paradise of Pearl Bay. However, it seems that this time around Pearl Bay needs Laura just as much as she needs it.

“I’m absolutely thrilled to be returning to Pearl Bay. Time has passed and the world has changed, so as we revisit this rich and strange place I trust we’ll all delight in the chance to explore how far we’ve come and how far we still have to go. I can hardly wait,” said Thornton in a statement.

While it’s unlikely David Wenham will be involved – due to the “300” star’s career surge after appearing as Diver Dan in the first series – most of the original cast are seemingly still available and would likely be thankful for the opportunity (particularly those who’ve been working in other areas in recent times, like Kevin Harrington – who runs Quest apartments in Werribee – Telstra worker Christopher Lyons, and Kane McNay, who works for a nationwide company outside of entertainment). Some of those expected to get the call include Cassandra Magrath, Kate Atkinson, Kerry Armstrong, Cameron Nugent, and original heartthrob William McInnes, now a best-selling author.

Original creator and head writer, Deb Cox, returns as Executive Producer alongside Thornton, Fiona Eager and David Mott.
