Speed Racer not out of the race yet

The long planned film version of Japanese cartoon classic "Speed Racer" is still very much alive, a scooper tells Cinescape.

Vince Vaughn, who initially pitched the idea to the studio, is still attached to the project. He’ll put the pedal to the metal, playing the brother of Speed Racer, Racer X, in the film.

Speed Racer is a chap who drives the specially-designed, Mach 5, using it to compete in races throughout the world. The Mach 5 is about to drive over any terrain and through any obstacles. And such features come in handy, with Speed constantly coming across competitors and international criminals who try and fix the races in their own favour.

In the film, Speed’s brother, Rex, has left the business because of the guilt and fallout of his being ordered to run a popular racer off the track. It’s believed Rex is now dead, but he’s merely been resurrected as Racer X – and Speed’s about to discover the hush-hush secret.

The script for the film is expected to be handed in this week.

Johnny Depp was once being eyed to star in the title role, but he’s now a little old to be playing the role of the teenage Speed-ster.
