Spielberg doing Da Vinci 2?

But isn’t it being made at Sony?

If this delays “Indy 4” another year, I’m going to spit chips…. in the direction of Dreamworks.

Steven Spielberg is apparently being coaxed into directing the next instalment in the “Da Vinci Code” film series – likely to culminate with the tenth instalment, in which Langdon teams with Lara Croft to unravel the age-old mystery ‘Why the heck do people watch Desperate Housewives?’ – says Sky News, via JoBlo.com.

Now, why the heck would sir Spielrock wanna go and do something like that? If the film is as bad as the book, “Angels & Demons”, he could find himself back in “Hook” territory – an expensive, over-bloated, boring mess.

Thankfully, SpielbergFilms.com believe it’s pretty safe to dismiss it as BS.

Says the site, “The rumor claims that Universal and DreamWorks Pictures have acquired the rights to author Dan Brown’s best-selling prequel to “Da Vinci Code” in hopes that Steven Spielberg will direct it.

“Code” is currently embroiled in a long-standing claim that Brown filched
research to draft his quasi-historical fiction, and those who are bringing the lawsuit against the book and film hope to get an injuction against Sony Pictures to keep “Code” out of theaters.

For its part, Sony hopes “Da Vinci Code” will become not only a big hit for them this year, but a tentpole franchise should audiences prove as receptive to the Tom Hanks film as they have to the book its based on.

As of late January of this year—just over a full month ago, mind you—”Da Vinci Code” producer Brian Grazer told trade paper Variety that he hoped “Code” would create a franchise and that Sony has first dibs on “Angels and Demons” as part of their contract for “Da Vinci Code.”

This of course, could put quite a damper on the reports that Universal/DreamWorks have purchased the “Angels and Demons” property for Spielberg.

Another major factor that should put this rumor to even further rest is the fact that DreamWorks is now owned by Paramount and Steven Spielberg is contractually obligated to deliver four to six pictures as director/producer for the parent studio. Spielberg, as always, will continue to play as a free agent, but any projects he collaborates on with other studios will be co-productions with Paramount.

Considering the fact that Paramount snatched DreamWorks away from Universal’s bidding at the 11th hour this past December, it’d be surprising, if not impossible to believe that Paramount’s new acquisition was entering into a co-production with the studio that was almost DreamWorks’ permanent home. Couple this with the fact that Sony had dibs on “Angels and Demons” just over five weeks ago, and the whole story doesn’t wash.”
