With the price of protein powder and valet parking constantly on the up, no surprise to hear Sylvester Stallone is relaunching the – thought-concluded – “Rocky” series.
Though the Oscar nominee has been playing a shadow gig in the “Creed” films the past couple of years, the new “Rocky” sequel would see the front row and center again.
At the Cannes Film Festival in May, Stallone discussed theoretically writing and filming another movie about the Italian Stallion Rocky Balboa — one where Balboa mentors a street fighter who lives in the United State illegally. However, he told the audience bluntly, “But I ain’t gonna do it.”
But seems he is gonna do it.
Speaking to Variety, the 73 year-old actor and filmmaker said MGM and Irwin Winkler’s production company are keen on Sly’s proposal.
“We’re very high on it,” says Winkler, noting Stallone would write and star in the film. “We’re very anxious to make it.”
“Rocky meets a young, angry person who got stuck in this country when he comes to see his sister,” Stallone says of the plot. “He takes him into his life, and unbelievable adventures begin, and they wind up south of the border. It’s very, very timely.”
Stallone also confirmed he’s toying with plans for a “Rocky” prequel TV series.
Ironically, he had announced last year that “Creed 2” would be the last time he’d play the iconic Rocky Balboa.
“I just want to thank everyone around the whole wide world for taking the Rocky family into their hearts for over 40 years,” Stallone said in the video. “It’s been my ultimate privilege to have been able to create and play this meaningful character. Though it breaks my heart, sadly all things must pass … and end. I love you kind and generous people, and the most wonderful thing of all is that Rocky will never die because he lives on in you …”
So is there a decent shot of “Rocky 7” coming to fruition?
“There’s a good chance that “Rocky” may ride again”, Stallone confirms.
Sly’s latest venture, “Rambo : Last Blood” unspools in September.
