Starship Troopers star could return for TV spin-off

While Columbia Pictures has a reboot of the original film in the works with no original players involved

While the film brass have their own plans (and quite frankly, those plans blow worse than a toothy hooker), the writer of 1997‘s “Starship Troopers” says he and the original band are looking at getting back together for a TV series – and they’re hoping that includes Casper Van Dien back on lead guitar.

Speaking with HN Entertainment recently, Neumeier was asked whether or not the cast of the original Paul Verhoeven directed film – including Van Dien, Jake Busey, Denise Richards and Patrick Muldoon – might be allowed to come back and play for some sort of reboot in the near future.

“Well, I think they can. I don’t want to jinx anything, but we are talking about trying to do a television show that is based on that idea. I’ve written all sorts of things with Casper [Van Dien] now as Johnny Rico and it’s a gas to write him because he gives you that character. He gives you more than you think, as soon as he shows up, the tone comes with him a little bit. I think it’s because he’s ridiculously hand-some, he’s got this boyish can-do attitude, which is what Johnny Rico is, and a lot of the brand comes with him.”

That project, unfortunately, isn’t as half as solidified as the other “Starship Troopers” project – a straight-up PG-13 movie reboot that won’t feature any of the original cast, let alone writers.

Neumeier says : “Well, I have mixed feelings about it [the reboot] because I think that what we did with the first Starship is almost not repeatable in a way…I based the structure of Starship Troopers when I was writing it, the structure of WWII propaganda films that the studios made between 1941 and 1944. We don’t really talk about those movies anymore, but that had a very particular structure and they were made during a conflict and they didn’t have an end-point as with Starship ends they’ll keep fighting.”

”I can imagine you could do a new one that was a more serious version of the book without the political commentary, but I don’t know if that interests me that much. The spectacle of the giant creatures and the ridiculous bloodshed, all that stuff, I don’t know if in this world of CG where you can do all that stuff pretty easily seeing a bunch of creatures fighting might not interesting enough right now, for me. But other people might like it.”

”I’m not sure, their idea is as I understood at a certain point was they said to kind of do An Officer and The Gentleman, Johnny Rico as the Officer and The Gentlemen version of a sci-fi movie. So, maybe you could do that a romantic picture about kids coming up together in the service and one of them be-coming an officer and all of that means, you know. It’s really not what Heinlein’s about, but that’s okay I can imagine you could do that. I’m not sure who goes to see that movie though.”

That film, boasting a script by “Baywatch” movie scribes Mark Swift and Damian Shannon, is housed at Columbia Pictures.

While not a grand slam when it was released at the box office twenty years back, “Starship Troopers” did go on to become quite the cult hit – it’s success paving the way for a few direct-to-video sequels and many-a-shared gif of Dina Meyer.

“Thor Ragnarok” helmer Taika Waititi recently shot an episode of Disney Plus’s “The Mandalorian” – the live-action “Star Wars” TV series that will feature, among others, fan-fave Boba Fett – and now it’s being revealed he’s also playing a character in it.

Showrunner and executive producer Jon Favreau (“Iron Man”) has posted a behind-the-scenes pic on Instagram of the beloved filmmaker recording his voice for the part of bounty hunter IG-88. The droid character is best known for his appearance in “The Empire Strikes Back” but he didn’t speak in his brief moments on screen.

Waititi, you may recall, also voiced a part in “Thor Ragnarok” – that of amiable Kiwi rock-guy Korg.

“The Mandalorian” is set after the fall of the Empire and before the emergence of the First Order. We follow the travails of a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy far from the authority of the New Republic.

Executive producers Robert Singer and Andrew Dabb also confirmed the end of the long-running CW drama.

“Firstly, we would like to thank all the people who have been involved with the show both in front of and behind the camera,” the duo wrote in a statement published by THR. “For us it has been an experience of a lifetime.”

“The support we have had from both Warner Bros Television and The CW has been incredible,” Singer and Dabb continued. “We’d like to give special thanks to Jensen, Jared and Misha for making this journey so special. It is now most important to us to give these characters that we love the sendoff they deserve.”

“Supernatural”, which first aired on The WB in 2005, is the long-running sci-fi/genre series in American broadcast television history.

The CW has attempted to launch a couple of “Supernatural” spin-offs over the years but CW president Mark Pedowitz has since said he’s given up on that idea, convinced the spin-offs never came together because they’re lacking the magical ingredient : Ackles and Padalecki.

The fifteenth episode of the series airs later this year.

The CW are now looking to a wave of new shows to help fill the void left by “Supernatural” and “Jane the Virgin”, which is also concluding, with punters sugegsting the new “Lost Boys” TV series, a “Nancy Drew” reboot and “Batwoman” starring Ruby Rose will be the net’s next-big-things.

ABC has announced today that they’ve commissioned a second season of “The Conners”.

Ranking as television’s No. 1 new comedy this season in Total Viewers (9.5 million) and Adults 18-49 (2.2/10), the “Roseanne” spin-off led Tuesday’s 8:00 p.m. half-hour in Adults 18-49 by 16% over its nearest competitor. During its first season, “The Conners” improved its time period by 33% in Total Viewers and by 22% in Adults 18-49, posting 5-year highs for ABC in the half-hour.

In “The Conners,” this iconic family grapples with parenthood, divorce, dating, aging and financial pressures in working-class America. Through it all – the fights, the coupon cutting, the hand-me-downs, the breakdowns – with love, humor and perseverance, the family prevails. The spinoff has also received critical acclaim with The Daily Beast calling it “warm, hilarious and fun,” and The New York Times declaring the new sitcom “special, deserving of a prime-time slot on television every week.”

The series stars John Goodman as Dan Conner, Laurie Metcalf as Jackie Harris, Sara Gilbert as Darlene Conner, Lecy Goranson as Becky Conner-Healy and Ames McNamara as Mark Conner-Healy. Additional cast to be announced at a later date.
