Steven Spielberg on status of Goonies sequel

The cast of ’80s classic “The Goonies” reunited today for Josh Gad’s ‘Reunited Apart’ video series – and naturally, cast and crew discussed the oft-mooted sequel.

There have been numerous attempts to get a sequel to director Richard Donner’s 1985 classic off the ground, but as executive producer Steven Spielberg said on the chat, it’s a no-go.

“Chris, Dick, and I – and Lauren – have had a lot of conversations about it. Every couple of years we come up with an idea but then it doesn’t hold water. Until we do, people are just going to have to look at this a hundred times!”

Spielberg is, of course, referring to director Dick Donner, his wife Lauren Schuler Donner, and writer Chris Columbus.

“How are you going to find seven miserable kids like this again that are new and fresh?”, laughed Donner.

Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Corey Feldman, Jeff Cohen, Ke-Huy Quan, Martha Plimpton, Joe Pantoliano, and Kerri Green were on hand for the livecast, as were Donner, musician Cyndi Lauper and other guests.
