Suicide Squad Director On Jared Leto’s “Fascinating” Joker Performance

Ever since the big reveal of Jared Leto as The Joker in the upcoming “Suicide Squad”, reports of the Oscar-winning actor’s method style have begun to surface. Both cast and crew have expressed their amazement at Leto’s dedicated performance as the iconic criminal mastermind. But something that has many worried is if he will be able to live up to the late Heath Ledger’s performance as the character in “The Dark Knight”.

The late actor’s incredible take is one that still continues to have an intense resonance with many, and so even though Leto has reportedly done wild things off-screen, such as sending dead rats to his costar Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn) and plopping a dead pig on the rehearsal table in pre-production, it still remains to be seen if all of this work is going to payoff in the end.

And according to writer-director of the comic book film David Ayer, it definitely will. In a recent interview with Total Film Magazine (via DC Vertigo Daily), the filmmaker expressed his wonder at Leto’s performance:

“What Jared has done is absolutely incredible. When he steps onto the set the world stops. Everything stops. What he’s done is so powerful, so menacing, so palpable, you can feel him. The crew stops working and just watches him. I have to get everybody going again because he’s so fascinating.”

So it seems like moviegoers could be in for a possibly legendary performance by Leto, especially with the other overwhelming praise he’s already received. But Ayer also went on to discuss how some may be misconstruing what type of movie “Suicide Squad” will really be. And by his statement, he clearly understands that there are very big expectations from fans and whether or not it be worthy of the massively-popular source material:

“What’s interesting to me is how there’s been a lot to perception of what this film is because we have been exposed more than other movies. What people think this movie is is not what it is. There’s much more to come.”

After two brilliant trailers released over the past few months for the film, it’s very possible the criticizers could be proven wrong once it hits theaters. And now with Warner Bros. possibly planning a sequel, it’s very likely we could be in for a real treat.

“Suicide Squad” will be released on August 5, 2016.
