While they let the live-action side of things rest for a while, Skydance has inked a deal with Netflix to turn “Terminator” into an animated series.
Japan’s Prodction I.G (“Ghost in the Shell”) will produce the series, with Mattson Tomlin (“The Batman”) serving as showrunner and executive producer.
While details are sparse, the new series is expected to be big and dark – if Tomlin’s past work is anything to go by.
“Anyone who knows my writing knows I believe in taking big swings and going for the heart,” said Tomlin in a statement, acquired by THR. “I’m honored that Netflix and Skydance have given me the opportunity to approach Terminator in a way that breaks conventions, subverts expectations and has real guts.”
Said Netflix’s vp of Japan and anime, John Derderian: “Terminator is one of the most iconic sci-fi stories ever created–and has only grown more relevant to our world over time. The new animated series will explore this universe in a way that has never been done before.”
Tomlin’s next, DC flick “The Batman” opens March 4, 2022.
The last “Terminator” film, 2019’s “Terminator : Genisys” grossed $261 million against a production budget of $185–196 million; the film is estimated to have lost as much as $130 million, and plans for future films were cancelled.
