Who is ready for a new horror flick with a lot to say and laughs to be had? One of the most unique voices in film right now comes from Jim Cummings. I was thoroughly impressed by his recent work, The Wolf of Snow Hollow. There was an impressive balance of humor and horror in that film while also passing along some interesting societal commentary. Cummings is at it again with another film that he is attempting to check all those boxes along with his writing and directing partner, PJ McCabe.

But The Beta Test is quite the different film, isn’t it? Cummings leads the way, as he usually does, but this time as a film industry insider named Jordan. He has a good life with his wife, and he is doing well for himself with big film clients as well. But then one day a strange invitation finds its way to Jordan. This ornate little document has quite the proposition. A sexual encounter…no strings attached. But is this exactly what he needs? He ponders…he fiddles around with his desired sexual preferences…he takes a dive into this unknown encounter. Blindfolded, he makes this sexual connection. But who is it? Does he know them?

But that is the mystery, isn’t it? This film builds tension based on the possibility of who this elusive woman is. But those are not the only layers that Cummings and McCabe play with. “Who” is not enough. “Why” is the real crux of the film. The “Why” is what adds layers of themes to The Beta Test. You can tell from the interesting title that this film may tackle societal expectations of men, women, and sexual relationships. Is the commentary a bit on the nose? It certainly is but the sharpness and boldness of where this film goes makes up for it in many ways. There is a sharp and biting black comedy to this film without blunting the blade.

There are certainly plenty of things to unpack in this film but what does Cummings himself bring to the table? His direction is quite stylish and sharp. The camerawork and editing make this film zip by including some well-paced montages (including a happy twist of fate in Jordan’s life being spliced with his first mysterious sexual encounter). There is a boldness to the filmmaking and how assured the filmmaking is. This film knows exactly what it is from its opening slasher scene and up to the end leaving the audience guessing. Narratively, the film might leave you a bit wanting but the filmmaking is impressive. So is the manic and “out there” performance that Cummings gives. His sleazy and committed performance brings a breath of fresh sarcastic air to every scene. His committed performance makes this thrill ride that much more enjoyable.

Will you feel satisfied with the journey you are taken on in The Beta Test? There is plenty of relevant commentary (including specific scenes that paint the uncomfortable environments in office settings). The central performance is endlessly entertaining. The messaging might be obvious but still bold and aggressive in an energetic way. The story might feel fully fleshed out or complete but there is still plenty to love about Cummings and McCabe’s film.
