The Joker origin movie in development

In another “Batman” universe spinoff, The Joker is being given his own film, to tell the story of the origin of the signature villain, reports Deadline. Warner Bros and DC are in the early stages of developing the film, which has Todd Phillips on board to write the script alongside Scott Silver. Phillips will also direct the movie, with Martin Scorsese to produce it with him.

The character of The Joker has been played by a lot of high profile names over the years, notably Jack Nicholson and Heath Ledger, with Jared Leto portraying the villain most recently in “Suicide Squad” and in the future Harley Quinn spinoff. However, in this origin story the film will launch a new face for the Joker, most likely a younger actor.

The setting and context of the upcoming film is described by Deadline: “the intention is to make a gritty and grounded hard-boiled crime film set in early-’80s Gotham City that isn’t meant to feel like a DC movie as much as one of Scorsese’s films from that era”.

No word yet on where the film will fit in the DC schedule.
