The Meg 2 in the works

Not surprisingly, considering the amount of flake it gobbled up at the box office, the producers of watery thriller “The Meg” have started fueling the engine on a sequel.

This afternoon at the U.S.-China Entertainment Summit in Los Angeles at the Skirball Center, producer Catherine Xujun Ying confirmed that “The Meg 2″ is in the works but warned that it’s still a ways off.

“That is definitely the plan,” Ying told reporters, “It’s still in the very early stages, but we’re working on it. We’re trying to keep it secret at this time.”

Ying is the VP of CMC and CEO of Gravity Pictures who was involved heavily in financing ”The Meg” which was distributed by Warner Bros. in U.S./Canada and a majority of overseas territories.

According to Deadline, who attended the Summit, there are currently no writers on the project yet and Warners hasn’t officially greenlit it.

Star Jason Statham told Moviehole earlier this year that if the response to “The Meg” was favourable, he’d more be happy to star in a sequel.
