So apparently the “Starship Troopers” reboot will be far less violent than Paul Verhoeven’s controversial ’90s incarnation. That’s all well and good, so long as the satirical edge and a cameo by Casper Van Dien (as Johnny Rico) haven’t been expunged from the template too!
Empire spoke to producer Toby Jaffe (“Total Recall”) who confirmed plans for a watered-down version of the bug-busting story.
“The more expensive a film is, the harder it is now to make it that violent. With Recall in particular, we made a conscious choice to keep it tonally closer to something like Minority Report. It gives the studio, and us as producers, the opportunity to reintroduce it in a new way.”
Remember the jump suits from Robert Heinlein’s book, though? They’re actually going to be in this movie version! That’s some good news to follow-up with the not-so good, right!?
“Working in a visual-effects renaissance as we are, we have the ability to do so much more now. We can do the Jump Suits [armoured exoskeletons from Heinlein’s novel], for example, which I don’t think they could have done before.”
Jaffe doesn’t sound like he’s a fan of Verhoeven’s film version at all, going so far as to say it was… a joke, almost.
“Verhoeven took [Robert Heinlein’s 1959 novel] from one extreme and made it almost comical, whereas our job is to be a little more faithful to the book, and ground it a little more.”
Jaffe’s latest producing effort, “Total Recall” – it also a remake of a Paul Verhoeven film – is in cinemas in August.
