The Suicide Squad : Elba not Deadshot, Davis returning

It was recently reported that Idris Elba would be taking over the role of Deadshot, from Will Smith, in James Gunn’s “The Suicide Squad”. While the “Hobbs & Shaw” actor is onboard the film, seems he won’t be playing Deadshot – the character won’t feature in the movie at all.

According to Variety, who originally had the scoop on Elba joining the reboot, the British actor will play a completely new character – who remains nameless for the moment – that joins Task Force X. Gunn and the powers-that-be ultimately decided that it wouldn’t be right to have Elba play Deadshot, because it’d mean disrespecting Smith, “who helped bring this character to life for the first time.”

The trade has also confirmed earlier reports that both Margot Robbie and Jai Courtney are reprising their roles as Harley Quinn and Captain Boomerang, respectively, for the Warner Bros-housed production.

Meanwhile, The Wrap is reporting that Viola Davis, who played Amanda Waller in the 2016 film, is also returning to play that role for the Aug 6.2021 release.

Despite being billed as  a total reboot, “The Suicide Squad” is so far shaping up to be more of a sequel.
