TNT has cancelled struggling gangster series “Mob City”.
The network, declaring that the ratings for the six-week event series weren’t enough to warrant any further episodes, say they look forward to working with showrunner Frank Darabont on something else.
“‘Mob City’ was created as a three-week television event and we are incredibly proud of the six hours we presented of this remarkable drama. Although the ratings of the limited series haven’t warranted more hours we are eager to work with Frank Darabont again and were delighted to bring the vibrant world of Mob City to life”.
The show got off a rough start, with it’s series opener snaring a soft 2.3 million total viewers, and the numbers just never picked up.
“Mob City” is the third new TNT drama – after “Monday Mornings” and “King & Maxwell” – that, even with the hard promo push the net did on all three, died in the pasty rear before a second season could even be discussed.
Based on the John Buntin book “L.A Noir”, “Mob City”, starring ”Walking Dead” thesps Jon Bernthal and Jeff DeMunn, as well as indy film champ Edward Burns, told of the ongoing battle between pre-prohibition gangsters and the city of Angels detectives that are hell-bent on ridding the world of them.
Though obviously happy TNT gave the series a home, Darabont had said he always saw the show as a weekly one-hour drama and not a six-week event series.
With the last episode ending on a cliff-hanger, there’s a fair chance we might see a webisode or free script download – of what would’ve come next – offered up to fans from the producers, to help tie up loose ends.
