There’s been more “Three Men and a Baby 3” rumours over the past couple of decades than Gary Busey’s been retweeted, but something solid may have finally landed in that cinematic diaper.
Talk of a second sequel to 1987’s “Three Men and a Baby” first surfaced – not surprisingly – shortly after the release of the first sequel (1991’s “Three Men and a Little Lady”), with reports suggesting it’d fix on Tom Selleck, Steve Guttenberg and Ted Danson’s threesome dad outfit struggling to keep up with the changing demands of a teenage Mary.
The storyline rumours haven’t drifted too far from that initially rumoured one – the three guys would now be dealing with a grown-up girl, rather than a baby or child, who according to the most recent reports, would be getting married in the new film – but a greenlight doesn’t seem to have inched any closer over the years.
It’s only been in the past couple of years that the sequel idea (at one stage rumoured to have been titled “Three Men and a Bride”) has gained momentum, and consequentially, the backing of Disney who hired scribes Chad Gomez Creasey, Dara Resnik Creasey, and Coline Serreau to work on a screenplay about 18 months back or so.
Tom Selleck, currently back on prime-time with TV’s “Blue Bloods”, appeared on The Talk (via EW) and said while he and co-stars Ted Danson and Steve Guttenberg have spoken to Disney about the film, there’s still no one firing a cap-gun.
“I heard it was [happening], so yes”, Selleck says. “I’ve talked to Ted and I’ve talked to Steve (Guttenberg), and we’d love to get back together, if they’ve got a good idea. But It seemed to be real, and then it disappeared. So…If they’re smart, they’ll do it. But I don’t want to rip it off, that movie was… the only movie I remember being number one at Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years. So many times they just make the deal with the actors and then they just say make the script by using the phone book, but we don’t want to do that.”
The good news, for fans of Leonard Nimoy’s cutesy classic (and it’s fine, but hardly startling sequel), us that EW contacted Disney to see where they were at with a “Three Men 3” and they all but confirmed it’s happening.
As surprised as I am that Disney aren’t just doing the ever-so trendy remake, tossing out the senior citizens for some fresh blood to play today’s Peter, Michael and Jack, I’m glad they’re not. Selleck, Danson and Guttenberg made one helluva team and even if neither are hugely bankable movie stars these days, the title should be enough to draw punters in. Mary Elizabeth Winstead for Mary? Just a suggestion!
