Twilight director to helm new Lost Boys

The CW has tapped Catherine Hardwicke (“Twilight”) to direct it’s small-screen take on vampiric classic “The Lost Boys”.

The film, which helped push along the film careers of then young guns Kiefer Sutherland, Jason Patric, Corey Haim and Corey Feldman, told of two brothers who discover their new hometown is a haven for neck-nibblers.

Hardwicke, who returns to vampire territory for the first time since the now cult-classic “Twilight” in 2008, also directed the pilots for “Reckless” and “The Raven Circle”.

The series, executive produced by networking darling Rob Thomas (“iZombie”, “Veronica Mars”), will follow the same storyline (only they’ll gender-swap the characters of the Frog brothers).

In addition, Deadline reports that Tyler Posey (“Teen Wolf”) and Kiele Sanchez (“Kingdom”) are set to play two of the three central characters. MTV alumna Posey will play Michael Emerson – the character played by Jason Patric in Joel Schumacher’s 1987 film – while Sanchez plays mother Lucy, the role Dianne Wiest played in the film.

Medalion Rahimi and Dakota Shapiro are also in the cast. Shapiro plays David, portrayed by Kiefer Sutherand in the film, while Rahimi plays Stella, a version of the Star character played by Jami Gertz.

The trade has a bit more on the plot, too :

Still mourning the death of her husband, Lucy (Sanchez) is forced to move back home to Santa Carla — something she’s dreaded since causing a town scandal 27 years ago, when she ditched her boyfriend to run off with another man.

Lucy’s elder son Michael’s plan to attend Columbia Medical school is thrown off by the diagnosis that he shares the same genetic weakness that killed his father. The only thing that consoles him is the friendship he strikes up with Stella, a young woman who runs a concession stand on the Santa Carla boardwalk.

Stella, carefree and Californian, has an immediate spark with Michael, but she’s not single: Her boyfriend is the sexy, dangerous and immortal vampire David, who is sometimes scary and always intense. The leader of a vampire gang, he’s wildly in love with Stella, who’s the only one who can control him.

The new “Lost Boys” likely won’t hit the box until next year.
