Vin Diesel confirms role in Avatar sequels

While he didn’t straight-up say he was onboard, Vin Diesel took to his socials recently to tease a possible role in James Cameron’s “Avatar” sequels. The actor, who voices Groot in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, walked the red carpet at the “Avengers : Endgame” on Monday where he confirmed for Entertainment Tonight that he is indeed involved. And seems Diesel’s fans can thank his “Guardians” co-star for making it happen.

“Probably my favorite in the whole cast [and] the closest in my family is Zoe Saldana,” Diesel shared. “Hence Avatar. Hence why I’m doing Avatar, or one of the reasons.”

Cameron is working on four sequels to “Avatar” but it’s not known whether Diesel appears in just one of the films or all of them.

The famed filmmaker hasn’t revealed a lot about the plot of the sequels, though has confirmed that the key cast do head into the deep in the next films.

“There’s a tremendous amount of water work across Avatar 2 and 3,” Cameron told Collider. “It’s ongoing into 4 and 5, but the emphasis is on 2 and 3.”

Each film is also a standalone movie – so you can skip on “Avatar 2” and yet still enjoy “Avatar 3”.

“Each movie is a standalone movie that we would want to go see,” producer Jon Landau said. “You don’t need to have seen the first Avatar to see Avatar 2. It sits there and we’re gonna take people on a visual and an emotional journey that comes to its own conclusion.”

Diesel joins a cast that includes Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Sam Worthington, Brendan Cowell, Kate Winslet, Edie Falco, Joel David Moore, CCH Pounder, Stephen Lang, Matt Gerald, Michelle Yeoh, Cliff Curtis and Giovanni Ribisi.

“Avatar 2” is due for release December 18, 2020.
