I’ve never seen an episode of “Firefly”. Besides the fact it only lasted a few episodes there in the states, it still hasn’t aired on Australian TV. And it probably won’t. But I’ve got some tapes of the show – if a feature film really is happening, maybe it’s time I acquaint myself with it?
Talking with IGN FilmForce, series creator Joss Whedon – the lord of all things “Buffy” – said a movie is indeed on the cards.
“The current future of Firefly is that I’m writing a movie script that I have some hope of actually getting made” says Whedon. “…it will be a completely new story that will be completely true to the series for those people who have seen it or see it on DVD, but will completely reintroduce it to those people who never did. Which makes it a very funny tightrope to walk. I’m basically serving two masters – I want to tell a mythic and exciting and timeless tale about nine people that people have never met, and yet not betray or repeat anything I do on the series. It’s going to be tough.”
For those – like myself – that never had the chance to catch the series, here’s a quick synopsis:
Set 500 years in the future in the wake of a universal civil war, FIREFLY tells the tale of Serenity, a small transport spaceship without a homeport. Captain Malcolm (“Mal”) Reynolds commands Serenity for legitimate transport and salvage runs, as well as more “entrepreneurial” endeavours.
On Serenity, crew and passengers live together in close quarters as they shuttle between the Alliance-governed galaxy and the border planets that delineate the new frontier. The crew undertakes almost any job — legal or not — to stay afloat and put bread on the table. Each of the passengers has his or her own motivation for being on board – some honourable, some more questionable. All have unique pasts and different reasons for wanting to get to their destination.
Serenity and its crew flies to the border planets, many of which are barely inhabited, because they want to stay away from the Alliance and below its big radar. Thrust together by necessity, the disparate men and women of Serenity face constant challenges, which test and reveal their true identities. FIREFLY is about their unpredictable lives and relationships, as well as their search for meaning in a very uncertain time.
