Why Leigh Whannell doing Escape from New York is likely good news for purists

With news that “Upgrade” and “Saw” scribe Leigh Whannel has been contracted to pen the long-awaited reboot of John Carpenter’s “Escape From New York”, a small glimmer of hope that the movie might end up sharing more of a connection with the original film than originally intended.

According to THR, Whannell is starting from scratch on the film – which previously boasted a drafts by Neil Cross – and is adamant that the film not be another dreaded remake, like the ill-fated “RoboCop” and “Total Recall” sequels from recent times.

Being no fan of straight-up remakes, might Whannell be penning a film that combines the old with the new – a’la “TRON Legacy”, the upcoming “Ghostbusters”, or the recent “Halloween” – and bring back Kurt Russell’s beloved Snake Plissken, as well as introduce a new character to help escape a walled-up Manhattan?

I’d say there’s a fair chance of that.

Meantime, a Whannell penned (he may also direct, but doesn’t sound like he’s decided whether he wants to wear two hats on this thing yet) “Escape from New York” could be a cool thing – what with the filmmaker’s “Upgrade” essentially a contemporary Carpenter flick.
