Willow sequel in the works with Solo writer

The long-rumoured “Willow” sequel is a’happenin – only it won’t be showing thrice daily at the multiplex, like the original 1988 film did. Nope, Disney+ are said to be developing a follow-up to the Ron Howard classic for their streaming service.

In an interview with MTV’s “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, Howard confirmed that his “Solo” scribe Jake Kasdan is in “serious talks” to bring the small-statued big-hearted hero to the small screen.

“There are some really serious discussions going on with Jon Kasdan, who was one of the writers of Solo, who kept hounding me about Willow the whole time we were shooting and also hounding Kathy Kennedy. We’re in discussions about developing a Willow television show for the Disney+. And I think it’d be a great way to go. In fact, George always talked about the possibility of a Willow series, and it’d be great and more intimate, and built around that character and some of the others. And Jon Kasdan has, I think, an inspired take on it and it could be really, really cool.”

Warwick Davis, who played the title role in the George Lucas-produced original, would reprise his role for the sequel series.
No word on Val Kilmer or Joanne Whaley at this stage.

Howard added that the series will feature a “more mature Willow… Warwick will be in it. Warwick is so cool and so good and he’s such a  good actor that I really hope we get the chance to see the mature Willow in action.”

Howard will likely be involved in some capacity — clearly, since he seems to have the lowdown on the project.
