Channing’s Gambit Gamble!

Likely inspired by Bradley Cooper’s success supplementing his SAG wages with that of some DGA residuals, Channing Tatum is reportedly considering emulating pulling double duty on his next film.

In order to get the long-moving superhero project “Gambit” up, Tatum’s reportedly considering taking the directing reigns himself on the movie. And it makes sense too – while directors have come and gone from the project, writers and producers too, it’s Tatum that’s remained with the project from its conception. If anyone now knows the project inside and out, and has likely heard every good, bad and in-between idea, it’s the “G.I Joe” star. Directing the film might be the best or worse decision of the actor’s career.

According to Deadline, the actor – most recently in “Kingsman : The Golden Circle” and “Logan Lucky”- is considering directing himself in the tale of charming card-throwing mutant, Rajin’ Cajun Remy LeBeau.

The project, said producer Simon Kinberg in an interview last year, is being set-up as a ‘romantic comedy’ – which is slightly puzzling but also pricks the ears up. “When you look at Gambit, he’s a hustler and a womanizer and we just felt like there was an attitude, a swagger to him, that lent itself to romantic comedy,” said the “Dark Phoenix” helmer in an interview with IGN. “You know, when I say romantic comedy, I use that term loosely, in the same term that I use the term western for ‘Logan’ loosely. It’s not like they’re gunslingers at high noon in ‘Logan.’ It’s just a vibe. And I would say the vibe of ‘Gambit’ has a romantic or sex comedy vibe to it. While it is also still very much a superhero movie with villains and heroes, as all these movies are.”

It’s early days yet, and anyone that’s been keeping track of the project knows, this one doesn’t seem to be moving at a speedy rate – heck, it was four years ago that Tatum and the creative team announced this project at Comic-Con. We also have to remember that Disney take over all these Fox projects soon, and whose to say they’re even keen to do the movie – let alone hand the untested Tatum the keys to the camera equipment?
