RoboCop series and film in works at Amazon; is direct sequel still in the mix?

Abe Forsythe had been previously attached to helm a feature

Last we heard, Aussie director Abe Forsythe (Ned) had come board the long-gestating Robocop Returns – written as a direct sequel to the original 1987 film, with plans to bring Peter Weller back to the OCP lab to boot – but it’s been all quiet in dystopian Detroit on that project.

That script, something original RoboCop writers Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner wrote years ago with Justin Rhodes, was brushed off for the new incarnation. Forsythe was believed to be rewriting it.

Now, per Deadline, the RoboCop property is being eyed as both a TV series and feature film franchise – with a new series possibly coming first. The news was reported in an article suggesting the streamer is mining their newly owned MGM library for franchises they can milk – with Alex Murphy being someone they’d like to see back on duty sooner rather than later.

No word if Forsythe’s RoboCop Returns is still in the mix.
