Stallone back for Cliffhanger sequel from Angel Has Fallen director

The actor will reportedly play a supporting role to new lead

Ric Roman Waugh (Angel has Fallen) will direct Sylvester Stallone in a reboot of the latter’s 1993 hit Cliffhanger.

According to THR, Sly is back as mountain climber Gabe Walker in a follow-up to be penned by Mark Bianculli (“Hunters”) that will reportedly see Sly’s Walker play a supporting role to a leading actor currently being sought.

Several years ago, Stallone was attached to a sequel titled Cliffhanger : The Dam, which would’ve had Walker taking on terrorists at the Hoover Dam. No idea if that’s the story still in the mix for the follow-up.

The original Renny Harlin directed film, which raked in $255 million, also starred Michael Rooker, Janine Turner and John Lithgow as the villain.

Neal H. Moritz’s Original Film will produce alongside Stallone and Braden Aftergood’s Balboa Productions.

Waugh says in a statement: “Growing up with the biggest action films of the ’80s and ’90s, working on many of them myself, ‘Cliffhanger’ was by far one of my favorite spectacles. To be at the helm of the next chapter, scaling the Italian Alps with the legend himself, Sylvester Stallone, is a dream come true. It’s going to be a great challenge and blast taking this franchise to new heights, a responsibility I don’t take lightly.”
